Description

SarahChenMemoryGate.org

(Lyrics in CC). For many, the 1989 song "Dream to Awakening" is synonymous with Sarah Chen. Acting as a counselor, she comforts those in heartache, advising them to let go and move on. Though well-written, the song’s direct message can easily seem forced or condescending if not carefully delivered. Its success critically depends on Sarah Chen’s interpretation.

We’ve already written about how this song was timely in the 80s-90s Taiwan. But what made it timeless was the singer herself and her precarious situation. By 1989, Sarah Chen had over 20 years of singing experience. Her vocals were incredibly beautiful, her singing otherworldly. Despite - or perhaps because of - her long career with ballads, Chen was fiercely protective of her own emotional world, a side she fought to keep private, especially from the probing producers and songwriters. At 31 and still unmarried, Chen was under immense societal and workplace pressure to conform. Moments before her live performance of "Dream to Awakening" on TV, her conversation with the hosts showed just how much pressure she was facing. With humor and self-deprecation, she deflected the jokes about her staying single.

Then she performed. With every ounce of grace, sincerity, and understanding she could muster, Sarah Chen sang directly to her listeners. And we listened - because in her voice, we heard the unspoken stories, the hidden losses of love, and the acceptance of a bittersweet fate. If Sarah could let go, so could we.

Chen's "Dream to Awakening" could never be replicated, not even by herself in later years. It's no coincidence that the song drawing me back to Chen's music ("Love is the Only Reason") was from her 1989 album. Beneath her calm appearances and gentle ballads lay a torment of emotions, haunting every note she sang.

No Sarah Chen, no "Dream to Awakening." But the reverse isn’t true—No "Dream to Awakening," Sarah Chen would still be Sarah Chen. In truth, the song is almost too shallow for someone as philosophically deep as Chen. She likely paid a steep price for the album's explosive success, which may have contributed to her eventual departure from music. Was "Dream to Awakening" good or bad for Sarah Chen? We may never know.
