Description

Arthur “Guitar Boogie” Smith is credited as composer, though the melody bears similarity to the 17th-century dance tune “In The Mountains” by Michael Praetorious. The famous version heard in the 1972 film “Deliverance” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YchKLJGWJA4 was performed in the soundtrack by Eric Weissburg and Steve Mandell but without songwriter credit for Smith, who subsequently brought suit and received both songwriting credit and recording royalties.

The original single was issued on MGM 12006 - Feudin’ Banjos (Smith) by Arthur Smith (tenor banjo) and Don Reno (five string banjo), released June 1955
