Written in 1834, Fanny Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in E flat major is one of the earliest surviving works in the genre to have been written by a woman. It has a considerable degree of formal freedom, starting with its fantasia-style Adagio – an unusual choice for an opening movement at the time. The players of the Aris Quartet capture all its somberness and poignancy in this highly expressive and communicative performance.
