Description

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts joins Samora Abayomi Pinderhughes for the next episode of #ArtsAcrossAmerica exploring Music for Abolition. 🌎💻⛓️

Samora Pinderhughes is a composer/pianist/vocalist known for striking intimacy with carefully crafted, radically honest lyrics and high-level musicianship as well as his use of music to examine sociopolitical issues. He became serious about making music after living in Cuba studying spiritual musical traditions before heading to New York City to study at Juilliard under master teachers Kenny Barron and Kendall Briggs; there he met his artistic mentor and MacArthur-winning playwright Anna Deavere Smith. This meeting started him down the path of writing lyrics and combining film/theatre with his music in radical new ways. Samora has since scored the award-winning documentary Whose Streets? and the Field of Vision film Concussion Protocol, and has written songs for films and TV shows including Little Voice, The Tale, All About Nina, and Burning Sands. He is a member of Blackout for Human Rights, the arts and social justice collective founded by Ryan Coogler and Ava DuVernay, and was musical director for their #MLKNow and #JusticeForFlint events. He is currently pursuing a PHD in Creative Practice and Critical Inquiry under mentor Vijay Iyer at Harvard University.

Samora will join hosts poet and performance artist Jasmine Mans and New York Times best-selling author Jason Reynolds.
