The Supremes were officially renamed "Diana Ross & The Supremes" just in time for their 15th single "Reflections" a song that spent two weeks at #2 stuck under Bobbie Gentry's musical mystery "Ode To Billie Joe".
The song's production featured a dissonant intro that mirrored the psychedelic trend of the times but the sound was unmistakably that of Holland-Dozier-Holland. It was the highest new entry on the Hot100 that week, entering at #61 and eventually peaking at #2, breaking the second chain of five consecutive #1 hits. They had amassed 10 #1 hits in about two years at this point.
Their career was beginning to stall after this release with the next three singles peaking at #9, #28, #30 before they reclaimed the peak position with the 1968 #1 hit single, the socially conscious "Love Child" that was about as controversial as Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach" seventeen years later.
Mary Wilson knew that Diana's departure was in the air the moment the group was renamed in Diana's favor and mentioned it in her book "Dreamgirl, My Life As A Supreme".
