Description
Vep Ellis (1917-1988), who wrote the stanzas, was a pastor of the Church of God in Cleveland, Tennessee. He was also music director for Oral Roberts. He was considered to be a prolific gospel songwriter, and one estimation credits him with writing over 500 songs. Several albums of his songs have been recorded by the chorus of Lee University. This song has also been recorded by country artists including Skeeter Davis and Don Gibson.
William (Bill) Lakey, who wrote the refrain which gives the song its title, was born in Kansas (1882-1963) and also wrote several other songs with Ellis. He worked with the Tennessee Music Company for several years. It is believed he wrote the refrain first and Ellis wrote the stanzas to make it complete.
