When Elvis was just a little fellow, he would slide off my lap, run down the aisle, and scramble up to the platform of the church. He would stand looking up at the choir and try to sing with them. He was too little to know the words, of course, but he could carry the tune.
-- Gladys Presley

Millions of people around the world are going to hear this album. It’s going to touch people in ways we can’t imagine. Listen, this isn’t rock n’ roll music or some of those songs they have me sing for my movies. This is God’s music. I just want to be his channel, but I can’t if my ego is in the way. I have to empty myself so the channel is totally pure and the message is heard loud and clear.
-- Elvis Presley

To make sure any kind of sound Elvis wanted would be available, 14 musicians were in the studio. In addition to the Jordanaires, The Imperials and a female trio were there to provide vocal backing. The first song the ensemble recorded was “Run On,” described by Ernst Jorgensen as a “an up-tempo number in the jubilee tradition.” It began with an opening piano-run by Floyd Cramer and a low “hmmm” from the vocal grouping. “The second take was full of energy,” Jorgensen noted, “with the full electric band and eleven singers making a very joyful noise. It was a remarkable updating of traditional gospel music -- tough, powerful, even threatening -- different from any religious music he had ever recorded.”
-- Alan Hanson

Charles Wolfe, Peter Guralnick, and other historians and journalists have written about Presley's relationship to the gospel music tradition, but the broader question of how Presley can help open up the unexplored issue of southern spirituality has not been explored.
-- Charles Reagan Wilson

According to author Ernst Jorgensen, "God's Gonna Cut You Down (Run On For A Long Time)," along with songs such as "Wade In The Water," "Go Where I Send Thee," and "Swing Down Chariot," came into being from the "Jubilee tradition" of African-American spiritual music.

The song had been recorded by Bill Landford & The Landfordaires (1943), The Golden Gate Quartet (1946), The Jubalaires (1947), and Odetta Holmes (1956). Elvis Presley recorded "Run On" on May 25, 1966 for release on his first gospel album "How Great Thou Art."

The rendition done by Elvis Presley is considered to be very close to the version recorded by The Golden Gate Quartet in both lyric and vocal arrangement and demonstrates his great love and respect for the tradition.
