Description

Matthew was a Jew by birth, raised with the traditions and expectations of his people. Yet, instead of walking the path they valued, he took employment as a tax collector for the Roman authorities.

He was seen as a traitor siding with the oppressors who taxed his own people harshly.

He lived in social and spiritual isolation friends were scarce, and family ties were broken; the community saw him as greedy and corrupt.

He endured open hatred insults, curses, and rejection were his daily reality.

But then came Jesus.

Unlike others, Jesus didn’t see only Matthew’s occupation or sins. He saw the man behind the desk. Jesus called him, “Follow Me,” giving Matthew not condemnation, but purpose. For the first time, Matthew saw a reason to live beyond money, beyond survival, beyond shame to live a just, honest, and meaningful life in service to God.

This is the heart of Matthew’s transformation:

When the world saw a traitor, Jesus saw a disciple.


Matthew’s life reminds us that no one is too far gone for grace. Even if our choices have alienated us from people, God can rewrite our story into one that reflects truth, justice, and mercy.
