I wrote this song in 2016. I was on an airplane, touring with Dee Dee Bridgewater in my jazz drums bag. I was in pain, fresh off a break-up of a long relationship. I wanted to write a verse, but didn’t have any beats on my phone. I did have Ahmad Jamal’s album Live at the Pershing. I put “What’s New” on. The recording had enough space to write to and just the right amount of heaviness. The emotions spilled out. Once I made the song, it felt weird knowing it was going to be out in the world. But it came into existence for me in such a pure way, I knew I had to let it out into the world.

I think of this as music for an occasion. It speaks to people at a certain time. I’m putting this here for whoever needs it today.
