JOSQUIN IN SPAIN
At the end of the 16th century, 100 years after the death of Josquin Desprez, his music was still widely admired and performed in Spanish cathedrals. Cities like Avila, Sevilla and Toledo owned books with Josquin's music, that were used so often, that they had to be repaired regularly.
The Missa Hercules Dux Ferrariae can be found in several Spanish sources from Barcelona and Toledo, but most notably in Diego Pisador's Libro de música de vihuela (1552) in which the mass was transcribed for voice and vihuela. Francisco Guerrero performed Josquin masses in Sevilla, paired with his own music and that of his predecessor Morales.
When the Utrecht Early Music Festival invited us to contribute to their Josquin series, we took the opportunity to present this rarely heard Spanish reading of Josquin's music, using the instrumentation that was typical for late 16th century Spanish cathedrals. This means this that voices were doubles by the ministriles altos, consisting of chirimía, sackbut and dulcian.
