“Listen First” - Song Reflection
This song was born from a deep study of 1 Samuel 3, where young Samuel learned to recognize God’s voice and respond with humble obedience. His simple words, “Speak, for your servant is listening,” became the foundation for this contemporary gospel piece.
Samuel’s story teaches us about the vital importance of spiritual attentiveness pausing before we act, listening before we speak, and seeking God’s direction before making our own decisions. In our noisy, fast-paced world, we desperately need this discipline of listening first.
The song also draws inspiration from Hannah’s example in 1 Samuel 1-2. Her story shows us that we can bring our deepest pain, fears, and struggles directly to God through prayer. Even in seasons of hurt and uncertainty, we can continue to turn toward Him in faith, knowing that He sees our circumstances and hears our cries.
Personal Application
This song emerged from a season of workplace challenges and personal struggles. Like many believers, I’ve found myself in situations where speaking up for truth and protection required courage I didn’t feel I possessed. The workplace can become a place of anxiety rather than peace when relationships are strained and trust is broken.
The lyrics reflect a desire to handle conflict and difficulty the way God would want by seeking His wisdom first, rather than reacting from hurt or fear. When we’re facing restoration of reputation, rebuilding of trust, and healing of relationships, the temptation is to take control ourselves. But Samuel and Hannah’s examples remind us that God’s timing and methods are always better than our own.
The bridge celebrates the faithfulness of these biblical examples while acknowledging that waiting can be painful. Yet through it all, God’s love remains constant, and His plans for us are good.
