Marion Harris, a white singer known for singing jazz and the blues, was the first artist to record the 1918 Tin Pan Alley standard “After You've Gone,” written by the African American team of J. Layton Turner (composer) and Henry Creamer (lyrics).
The chorus adheres to a standard ABAC pattern but is only 20 measures long. There are four 4-bar phrases, followed by a 4-measure tag. The song is harmonically active, with chord changes in almost every measure. The opening four notes to the chorus are identical to the opening notes of "Peg o' My Heart" (1912) — at the time songwriters often borrowed the first few notes of a hit melody.
Marion Harris (born Mary Ellen Harrison; March 25, 1897 – April 23, 1944) was an American popular singer who was most successful in the late 1910s and the 1920s. She was the first widely-known white singer to sing jazz and blues songs.
She died on April 23, 1944, at Le Marquise Hotel from a fire that started when she fell asleep while smoking in bed.
Lyrics:
Now won't you listen honey, while I say,
How could you tell me that you're goin' away?
Don't say that we must part,
Don't break your baby's heart
You know I've loved you for these many years
Love you night and day,
Oh honey baby, can't you see my tears?
Listen while I say
After you've gone and left me cryin'
After you've gone there's no denyin'
You'll feel blue, you'll feel sad
You'll miss the dearest pal you've ever had?
There'll come a time, now don't forget it
There'll come a time when you'll regret it
Oh babe think think what are you doing
You know my love for you will drive me to ruin
After you've gone, after you've gone away
After you've gone and left me cryin'
After you've gone there's no denyin'
You feel blue you feel sad
And you'll miss the only pal you ever had
There'll come a time, now don't forget it
There'll come a time when you'll regret it
Oh babe think think what are you doing
You know my love for you will drive me to ruin
After you've gone, after you've gone away
I said away
