Barrett Strong
Barrett Strong never really wanted to sing. He just wanted to play the piano and write songs. Before he got his wish, Barrett made history as the raw R&B performer who helped put Motown on the map.
Jackie Wilson, who'd gone to school with Barrett's sister, introduced the gravelly-voiced, teenaged singer to Berry Gordy in 1957. Barrett and Berry cut a single, "Let's Rock"/"Do The Very Best You Can", which etched them a groove in the local Detroit area. Then came a session in 1959 which landed them both on top - and I was there when it happened.
We were all in the recording studio after a day's work, throwing around ideas. Berry was at the piano, banging out this rhythm over and over again, and he yelled to me, "Give me something! Give me something everyone can relate to." So I yelled back, "Money! That's what I want." Barrett pushed Barry off the piano stool to play the riff himself, and not too-long after we had a mega-smash.
Still, Barrett says, "I was never comfortable with myself as a recording artist. When I teamed up with Norman Whitfield to write some songs, I found all the confidence I needed. When I heard Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye and the Temptations sing my songs, I finally felt good about what I was doing."
Strong's writing credits include "I Wish It Would Rain", I Heard It Through The Grapevine", "Cloud Nine", "Just My Imagination", "War" and many others. (JB)
