A perfect piece to share with your loved ones - drift away with the gradual evocation of the sense of longing for greater kinship. Remembering was another piece inspired by Cantonese music and opera. Music from the Cantonese opera Princess Changping《帝女花》was met with the lullaby Moonlight《月光光》in a melodic dichotomy born from different perspectives of the imagery of the moon.

The Cello-like instrument featured in this piece is the Gehu (革胡) – which loosely translates to ‘revolutionary fiddle’. Invented by Yang Yusen (杨雨森) in the 1950s, his intention was to have a Cello-like instrument with aural and visual aesthetics that Chinese people could proudly lay claim to. The outcome of Yang’s efforts was a four-stringed instrument that is played almost exactly like a Cello, using a Cello bow and with part of the instrument resting on a chair.

The Gehu (革胡) was adopted in memory of Dr Lai-Wah Lai.

About the Ensemble:
The TENG Ensemble is a critically acclaimed Singaporean Chinese fusion music group that bridges between cultures East and West, boasting musical influences from both the traditional and the contemporary.

As a collective of music educators, scholars and award-winning instrumentalists, the Ensemble’s performances have been a staple in Singapore’s arts scene since 2009. At the 2015 National Day Rally, The TENG Ensemble was described by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as ‘creating something uniquely Singapore’.

The Ensemble’s two full-length albums were both rated 4.5 out of 5 stars by The Straits Times and their second album ‘Stories from an Island City’ peaked at #1 on Hong Kong’s iTunes World Music Chart. In 2018, the group was awarded the CHT International Award for Musical Performance and Education.
