Description

"Maggie May", released in 1971, became Rod Stewart's first substantial hit as a a solo performer and remains one of his best known songs. The song was originally the B-side to the single, "Reason To Believe", but radio stations began playing "Maggie May" and it soon became the popular side. Stewart, along with Faces, performed the song on Top Of The Pops that same year with British DJ John Peel pretending to play mandolin (actually, Ray Jackson of Lindisfarne played mandolin on the recording).

This is the version sent to radio stations, hence the "Radio Short Edit". The single version had a 5:15 running time while three other versions in other territories had different running times (Germany - 3:57, Spain - 5:46, South Africa - 2:43). "Maggie May" reached the #1 position in the US, Australia, Canada, and the UK. The song also reached #2 in Ireland, #3 in both New Zealand and the Netherlands, #5 in Switzerland, and #11 in Germany.
