Journey Revisited Sonic Bedazzlement - for sheng, harp & percussion was composed at the request of the young sheng performer Kevin Cheng for his recital “The Indiscernible Phoenix” held in September 2022. The Chinese title of Sonic Bedazzlement comes from the last line of a poem, written by the Tang poet Lang Shiyuan (727-780?), depicting the bedazzlement of listening to a sheng playing from afar. While the four Chinese subtitles pay much homage to the same poem, their English counterparts refer to musical materials of respective movements. The opening Fanfare Fragments is a mosaic-like prologue constructed out of a few simple, seemingly unrelated gestures. A Distant Dirge is a bleak elegy in which snippets of John Dowland’s (1563-1626) famous lute song Lachrimae Pavan is heard in the harp part. Quasi Answers provides three plausible responses to Charles Ives’s (1874-1954) The Unanswered Question (1908). The final movement Journey Revisited is a reinterpretation of the iconic traditional tune Lao Liu Ban (An Old Tune in Six Phrases), and serves as the structural downbeat of the whole suite.

碧桃千樹花 - 為笙、豎琴及敲擊⽽作 鳳吹聲如隔彩霞 不知牆外是誰家 重⾨深鎖無尋處 疑有碧桃千樹花 唐代詩⼈郎⼠元（727-780?）的《聽鄰家吹笙》風華清麗，思切⾼雲。以視覺形象寫聽覺感受，獨具⼀格；且四句詩迴環緊承中有遞進， 章法⾼妙。 《碧桃千樹花 - 為笙、豎琴及敲擊⽽作》的創作靈感乃源於此詩。以豎琴與敲擊的虛實點描，影襯笙聲的錯綜流麗。寫「隔彩霞」的奇妙 撩⼈，模「是誰家」的悵惘、「無尋處」的憧憬，道「千樹花」的灼灼其華。 全曲由四個短⼩的樂章組成。序曲〈隔彩霞〉由數個聽似不相關的⾳樂素材镶嵌在⼀起，即興隨意。〈是誰家〉則略帶傷感，豎琴斷斷續 續奏起道蘭（1563-1626）的名曲《流吧！我的眼淚》。〈無尋處〉為艾伍⼠（1874-1954）的《未作回答的問題》（1908）提供了三個 似是⽽非的答案。〈千樹花〉是中國傳統⾳樂最具代表性的⺟曲《老六板》的重新剪裁，樂曲的結構⾄此亦豁然明朗。
