Scott Bedford Four Lou Resch INTERVIEWS – 1974 and 1983
Lead singer Lou Resch interviews: 1974 and 1983: I was fortunate to interview the lead singer of the Scott Bedford Four a couple of times. 1974: Telephone interview recorded at WCRV – AM 1580, Washington, NJ. 1983: Live in the studio at a special “Lehigh Valley Hits” edition of my Sunday Night Hall Of Fame Show at WAEB – AM 790, Allentown, PA.
1974: At WCRV, I was writing/producing a special “British Music Invasion – Ten Years Later”. Lou Resch was the lead singer of the group The Scott Bedford Four. The group had a couple of hits in the Allentown, PA area in 1965, both of which had the British Music Invasion “Sound”. Through some friends, I was able to find Lou, where he was “hiding in plain site” at his Northampton, PA, hometown auto re-con business..
That first interview, I asked him a couple questions and let him relate the history of the group. I remember editing the interview to include for my British Music Invasion special. Nearly 40 years later, I found the original five-inch reel to reel tape of that telephone interview. I digitally restored what could be salvaged for this YouTube video.
1983: Second interview is when Lou Resch visited the WAEB studios on July 24, 1983 for my special edition Sunday Night Hall Of Fame show. That night was a tribute to local regional hit records, and Lou also brought in a few extra records for me to play on the air. One was the group’s release during the Summer of 1965 on the Congress label: “You Turned Your Back On Me”. I had reluctantly sold my copy of that record almost ten years earlier at my oldies record store Rock N Roll Heaven in Bethlehem, Pa. I had promised a customer that would find him a copy, and when I could not, he finally talked me into selling him my copy. So of course I was thrilled when Lou brought one in to play that night, and even jokingly asked him if he would sell me his.
Lou also brought along the Scott Bedford Four on the Philips record label, “Won’t Find Better Than Me”. From the Fall of 1966, the group had changed their name to The Elusives. It just happened to be a favorite song of mine by the original artist, The Kit Kats. Lou told me that night how much he disliked his own version because of the production on the record. Later that evening on the special show, Kit Stewart of The Kit Kats was also interviewed.
Then to top off Lou’s visit, I was able to play a “Test Pressing” of a song recorded in 1969 called “Never Gonna Love Again”. Lou related that by 1969 the group had reunited with the producer of their first two records and had just worked out a deal with RCA. Before the paper work could be finalized, the Scott Bedford Four “retired”, and of course, that great record was never released. To the best of my knowledge, Lou Resch had the only copy of it, and I’m so thrilled to be able to include it on YouTube.
If you are from the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania and enjoy local regional hits, please look for additional interviews from my 1983 show. Most of the artists and songs may have been regional hits, but over the decades, many of them have also drawn worldwide attention. I know that for many years, many of the artists and records have been sought after by record collectors.
Hearing the interviews again has given me incentive to continue to restore the July 24, 1983 Lehigh Valley Hits show from my original reel to reel tapes. All the interviews that night are a very small but interesting part of the Lehigh Valley history in Rock N Roll music history.
In addition to this interview of Lou Resch of the Scott Bedford Four, here is a list of the groups and interviews that have survived on reel to reel tape:
-Rick Wise, lead of Ricky Dee and The Embers – Workout Part 1 and Part 2
-Bob Weidner, lead of The Devils – The Devil Dance and The Bentleys – Now You’re Gone
-Richie Molinaro, lead of Ognir and the Nite People – I Found A New Love
-Bob Dougherty, lead of The Kings Ransom - Shame
-Barry Wright, member of The Morticians – Now That You’ve Left Me
-Andy Zachar, who released solo records as Andy Starr, as well as records with his group The Casinos
-Dale Schneck and Hub Wilson who represented The Shillings – Lyin and Tryin and Just For You Baby
-Jay Proctor, lead of Jay and The Techniques – Apples Peaches Pumpkin Pie and their many other national smash hits
And
-Kit Stewart, lead of the huge Philadelphia regional group The Kit Kats
(Music in this video, which I produced, features two interviews from my original radio broadcasts: 1974 at WCRV – AM 1580 in Washington, NJ, and from July 24, 1983 on WAEB – AM 790, Allentown – Bethlehem – Easton, PA. Both interviews were only broadcast one time and have been digitally restored. I was a full time employee at WCRV, and a contract employee at WAEB: writing, producing and hosting The Sunday Night Hall of Fame Show. I provided all tapes to both radio stations and the tapes remained in my possession.)
