Description
Released in 1969. Victor Jara is one of the most important singer-songwriters in Chilean history, with Te Recuerdo Amanda being one of his most well-remembered songs. The song illustrates the hardships that Chilean workers had to face in factories and mines during the 1960's, how mistreated they were and how a lot of them would die from work accidents. As such, the song also pays an homage to women, specially those who had to endure the rough labor conditions of their hardworking husbands. Jara would go on to say: "Women are not slaves: they are equal to men and have the same rights. Asking women for purity and dedication at home when men are not expected to do that, is a form of slavery."
This song was banned from many dictatorships across South America because it made known the injustice that the working force suffered during those times.
