Description
The Pogues are seen here on MTV (At the time it actually showed music and not utter bollocks).
The Cutting Edge was was a music program that aired on MTV (US) from March 1983 to September 1987, on the last Sunday of every month.
This is a very nice historic document of the band moving forward, RS&TL had driven their upward momentum and the intelligence of Shane can be clearly heard in his voice over.
It is known that Costello was a sore point for Shane due to his insistence that Shane record an individual take for each line of each song for Rum Sodomy & the Lash.
The album was a masterpiece with Shane’s writing reaching a new level. I have had many a conversation with fellow Pogues at the gigs - Who was Sally MacLennan they would ask?
The answer is simple, Sally Mac was a beer! (Stout if you want to be pernickety) That is the genius of Shane’s writing. It is on many levels and what you think is obvious may vert well not be.
It is hard to criticise Costello’s production of the album and the equally well produced Poguetry EP. (I bought the cassette and not the vinyl which I eternally regret, no idea where the tape is now).
I do think some of the feel of Shane’s vocal was lost for the cleaner sound with the vocals more emotive on the If I should Fall With Grace From God album.
However that is nitpicking and we know Shane was distinctly un-impressed when Costello ran off with his bass player.
To be fair Cait had been romantically rejected by Shane and she grew increasingly tired of Shane and Spiders drinking.
Perhaps the split was inevitable, Costello or no Costello.
